The biggest minimum wage increase Metro Manila has ever grantedThe first tranche of the approved ₱85 increase took effect on Saturday, July 25, adding ₱60 a day for around 1.1 million minimum wage earners in the National Capital Region. The Department of Labor and Employment calls it the largest minimum wage increase granted in Metro Manila to date. Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino has been direct about the other half of the story: employers must follow the wage order, and non-compliance carries penalties set by law. A business group asked for the increase to be suspended over inflation worries. Malacañang said no. Who is covered Private-sector minimum wage earners in the National Capital Region. If you are employed in Metro Manila and were earning the old minimum of ₱695, your daily rate is now ₱755 by law, no memo from HR required. Workers in agriculture, in retail or service shops with 15 workers or fewer, and in manufacturing with fewer than 10 employees move from ₱658 to ₱718. Who is not Kasambahay, government workers, and anyone already above the minimum. Domestic workers are covered by a separate wage-setting process, not this order. Government salaries follow their own law. And if you already earn above ₱755, nothing moves automatically: the Labor Secretary has urged that wage distortion, where the gap between minimum earners and those just above them collapses, be resolved through negotiation between labor and management. If that is you, the move is to ask, in writing, how your employer plans to adjust the differentials. If payday does not move Ask payroll first, then bring it to DOLE. Start with a simple written question to your HR or payroll office citing Wage Order NCR-27. If the answer does not come or does not add up, the Department of Labor and Employment takes complaints through its hotline 1349 and at any DOLE field office in the region. Non-compliance carries penalties set by law, and you cannot legally be dismissed for asking about your wage. |
