Magandang araw, kabayan. There is a particular kind of money that goes missing in plain sight. Not stolen, not hidden, just quietly accumulating under a name most people associate with housing loans they never took out. Every Pag-IBIG deduction on your payslip, every contribution you sent home as an OFW, has been going into an account that belongs to you. Two of the rules governing how you reach that money changed, and the change made it easier. Today is about what is actually in there, how much of it you can pull out, and who gets turned away at the counter. |
In today's issue · 5 min | › | 💰 Ninety percent, not eighty: the multi-purpose loan now lets you borrow up to 90% of your total accumulated savings, raised from the old 80% ceiling. | | › | ⏱️ Twelve months, not twenty four: the contribution requirement was cut in half, which pulls a lot of newer members over the line for the first time. | | › | 📈 The 7.12% side fund: MP2 savings paid a record dividend for 2025, it is tax free, and OFWs can now open and claim it entirely online. | | › | 🌏 OFW Desk: the one sentence that ends every OWWA fee scam, plus three verified jobs with two closing this week. |

| 💰 The Win of the Day |
| 90% | of your total accumulated Pag-IBIG savings is what a member can now borrow under the multi-purpose loan, raised from the old ceiling of 80%, with the waiting period cut from 24 months of contributions down to 12. |
|
The savings account most members forgot they were buildingPag-IBIG raised how much of your own money you can borrow and halved how long you have to wait for it, and a year on, most members still budget as though neither happened. The multi-purpose loan is not a loan in the way a bank loan is a loan. It is money drawn against your total accumulated value, which is the sum of what you put in, what your employer put in beside it, and the dividends both have earned since. Pag-IBIG raised the ceiling on that from 80% to 90% of your total, and in the same move cut the qualifying period from 24 months of contributions to 12. The change took effect in the middle of last year and applies to the calamity loan and the health and education loan on the same terms. What makes it worth an issue now is how few people have recalculated. A member who checked two years ago and was told they had not contributed long enough may well qualify today, on a larger amount than they were quoted. | › | The 90% ceiling and the 12 month qualifying period both come from Pag-IBIG's own revised guidelines, effective mid 2025. | | › | Your total accumulated value includes your employer's counterpart contributions, which is why the number is usually larger than members expect. | | › | A one year repayment term was added alongside the existing two and three year options. |
Why it matters For a lot of households this is the cheapest money available to them, because the collateral is savings they already own. Read the loan rules on Pag-IBIG's own site → |

| 📚 The Rules That Decide It |
The condition that disqualifies people who technically qualify Twelve months of contributions is not enough on its own. You also have to be current. This is the part that sends people home from the counter. Alongside the 12 month total, a member has to be active, meaning at least one contribution posted within the last six months before the application. An OFW who contributed faithfully for four years and then stopped when a contract ended can hold a healthy balance and still be turned away, because the recent activity test fails even though the savings test passes. The fix is not complicated and it is worth knowing before you travel to a branch. Contributions can be made voluntarily, and posting one restores active standing. If you have been out of the workforce or between contracts, sort that out first, then apply. The side fund paying more than most banks MP2 savings paid 7.12% for 2025, the highest rate in the fund's 45 year history. MP2 is a separate, voluntary account that sits beside your regular Pag-IBIG savings rather than replacing them. It runs on a five year term, the minimum to open one is ₱500, and the earnings are tax free, which is the part that quietly does the heavy lifting when you compare it against a time deposit quoting a similar headline rate. As of last year OFWs can open an MP2 account and file maturity claims entirely online through Virtual Pag-IBIG, which removes the old problem of needing someone at home to queue on your behalf. What we are not going to tell you is what it will pay next year. The 2026 dividend is declared in early 2027, and anyone quoting you a guaranteed future rate is guessing. The number we are deliberately not printing Published interest rates for the multi-purpose loan disagree across sources, so confirm yours at the counter. We found two different figures in circulation for what the loan actually costs, quoted as a monthly rate in one place and an annual rate in another, and they do not reconcile. Rather than print a number that sends you into a branch with the wrong expectation, we would rather tell you the honest thing: ask for the current rate and the total repayment figure in writing before you sign, and compare that against what the money is for. Borrowing against your own savings still costs interest, and it reduces what your balance earns while the loan is outstanding. That trade can be well worth making. It should still be made with the real number in front of you. |

| OFW DeskTue & Fri The rate we can actually source, the sentence that ends every fee scam, and the account check worth doing tonight. Peso watch This is the Aug 4 reference figure, the most recent we could verify from a named source. Rates move daily, so check yours before you send. | ₱60.93 = $1 We could not source a verified closing rate for this week at the time of writing, so we are printing the Aug 4 reference figure and labelling it as exactly that rather than passing a stale number off as today's. The practical advice does not change with a few centavos either way. Compare two remittance providers before you send, because the spread between them is reliably larger than the daily move in the rate. | The sentence that ends every OWWA fee scam OWWA charges one thing: a USD 25 membership contribution valid for two years, and that single payment covers every programme and benefit the agency runs. Deputy Administrator Jasmine Gapatan put it plainly at a briefing this year, saying the agency will never ask money in exchange for help with its services. So the rule is short enough to memorise. If anyone asks you to send money to a personal account for OWWA assistance, for repatriation, for a scholarship slot, or to speed up a claim, it is a scam without exception. Verify anything you are unsure about through the OWWA hotline 1348, or through a Philippine Overseas Labor Office. Do not transact through a private message from an account that found you first. Scam alert Fake OWWA scholarship registration links are circulating and lead to phishing pages built to harvest personal data. The scholarship system lives on the agency's own government domain. If a registration link does not sit on a gov.ph address, close the tab. |

| 7.12% | tax free was the MP2 dividend declared for 2025, the highest rate in the fund's 45 year history. The figure that matters for comparison is not the headline number but the tax treatment, because MP2 earnings are exempt while a comparable bank product is generally not. Next year's rate is declared in early 2027 and nobody knows it yet. |

| 🌅 Before You Go |
Everyday Wins | Look up your total accumulated value tonight. Everything in this issue turns on one number you probably do not know: the total sitting in your Pag-IBIG account, including the employer counterpart and the dividends. You can check it through Virtual Pag-IBIG with your membership ID. Ten minutes, from your phone, and it tells you whether any of this is worth a trip to a branch. Most people are surprised on the high side, because they only ever counted their own half. |

Quick Hits | ● | Alex Eala won her first WTA Tour title at the Mubadala DC Open, beating top seed Jessica Pegula on the way. First Filipina to do it. We are keeping it to a line because you have almost certainly seen it already, but it deserved saying out loud. | | ● | If you were told years ago that you had not contributed long enough for a Pag-IBIG loan, that answer is out of date. The qualifying period is now 12 months rather than 24, and the amount you can draw went up at the same time. Worth asking again. | | ● | Post one voluntary contribution before you apply if you have been between jobs or between contracts. Active standing needs a contribution inside the last six months, and that single posting is what separates an approved application from a wasted trip. | | ● | Free TESDA courses remain the cheapest way to add a certificate to a job application, and the online catalogue costs nothing to browse. Browse the free TESDA courses | | ● | Before you or a family member signs with any recruitment agency, check its licence on the DMW list. Both overseas jobs in today's issue show their licence numbers, which is what a legitimate posting looks like. Check an agency on the DMW list |
